“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.”
Set in the 70s, the story is about a mixed-race couple living in the Midwest; the death of their 16-year-old daughter; and the family’s deep-rooted secrets before and after her death. The tragic family drama isn’t just about the Lydia’s death, but about the family’s desperation for truth and how they each deal with the pain.
This isn’t the first book I’ve read about the loss of a child (Lovely Bones, for example), but this book has resonated with me more than others. Perhaps it’s the subtle and understated writing in Celeste’s Ng’s debut novel. Maybe it’s the passionate characters and their journeys through grief and self-discovery.
Whatever the case, this book is an outstanding read from start to finish. If you need a quick and thought-provoking book, Everything I Never Told You is a great choice.
